Famous & Infamous Births & Deaths 22nd December

Today’s another one of those rare ones whereby there’s no previous posting to go by, given I’ve been away this day for the past two years – that boring factoid over with, we start with: 10th Sikh Guru, born Gobind Rai but known as Guru Gobind Singh followed the faithful from 1666. Norwegian of the day, poet Johan Sebastian Cammermayer Welhaven started babbling incoherently in 1807. Composer Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini had his first act in 1858. Starting off as a flour miller before going onto found the film company bearing his name, Joseph Arthur Rank started to rise from 1888. Character actor of more than 111 films, Minor Watson wondered when’s your birthday? after 1889. Actress Edith Margaret Emily ‘Peggy’ Ashcroft found when the wind blows from 1907. Game show host and announcer born Eugene Jelyevich or Gene Rayburn as he became known, scored his first point in 1917. Radio DJ/game show host but now some sort of pet therapist, Noel Ernest Edmonds started off small in 1948. Two of the white toothed medallion wearing brothers from family band the Bee Gees, Maurice Ernest and Robin Hugh Gibb were children of the world in 1949. Land owner who had vast swathes of London under his control, Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor, 6th Duke of Westminster started to develop from 1951. Actor Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeha-Fiennes left the hurt locker in 1962. Guitarist with band Manic Street Preachers, Richard James ‘Richey’ Edwards had a scream to a sigh in 1967. One hit wonder and ex-squeeze to Johnny Depp, Vanessa Chantal Paradis found her voice in 1972.

Death wise, it’s a pretty light day but brickie, Richard of Eastwell or Richard Plantagenet just about managed to finish his tomb for his arrival in 1550. Writer George Eliot or Mary Ann Evans, granted herself ample leave from 1880. Fellow writer Helen Beatrix Potter was put down 1943. Journalist/broadcaster who was also dad to David & Jonathan, Frederick Richard Dimbleby hit his deadline in 1965. Member of the governing body of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Frederick William Franz left the watchtower in 1992. Singer/songwriter with The Clash, John Graham Mellor who opted for the slightly edgier name of Joe Strummer had the answer to should he stay or should he go resolved in 2002. Finally, Irish hurler James ‘Shem’ Downey was lowered gently into his grave in 2013.
